Atlas Sailed is a type of an artificial intelligence (AI).
The AI reads books and selects interesting phrases, as determined using natural language processing.
Once it finds phrases of interest, it begins to construct an idea of how we (That's us, you and me...) could go about modifying our physical world to be more like the phrase from the book.
The artificial intelligence (AI) needs help. It wants you to click on the idea and choose the best instructions, 3D models and Art so it can better learn how to build things.
When you interact with the site, the AI is learning how to better pair an image with the words of the book.
The AI cares about the sentiments expressed in the paragraph of the book.
The AI uses images processing to develop an understanding of the images in the book. It looks at the shapes, colors, and basic patterns in the images, and builds a connection between images and text.
Eventually the AI will be allowed to interact with the world.
For now we let it experiment with generating illustrated versions of the stories it has read.
You can see these illustrated books on our books page.
Someday we might let it handle access to a Shapeways printer. Or we might connect the AI to a CNC machine, where it can try really building the ideas.
Atlas Sailed is an experiment. We hope you enjoy exploring the results.
